We’re three days into a new semester and yesterday, Student Life at Sydney Uni held its first meeting for 2014, which was graced by an unprecedented amount of fresh faces. God is good and He is adding to our numbers on every campus.
But along with a fresh intake, comes fresh anxieties. How will we connect with everyone? How can we spark revival on our currently hostile campuses? It’s always a logistical nightmare trying to fit everyone’s unique timetable into a structure of Core Groups and Bible Studies, nevertheless, with God’s help we always manage.
This time of year, when administration takes priority, it is often difficult to keep a spiritual perspective on uni life. So, I would like to devote this space to anchoring us into God’s plan and reminding us why we do what we do. I’d like to do that by referring to a song which I consider to be the anthem for Student Life campus ministries: Asleep In The Light by Keith Green.
Do you see, do you see
All the people sinking down
Don’t you care, don’t you care
Are you gonna let them drown
How can you be so numb
Not to care if they come
You close your eyes
And pretend the job’s done
“Oh bless me Lord, bless me Lord”
You know it’s all I ever hear
No one aches, no one hurts
No one even sheds one tear
But He cries, He weeps, He bleeds
And He cares for your needs
And you just lay back
And keep soaking it in,
Oh, can’t you see it’s such a sin?
Cause He brings people to your door,
And you turn them away
As you smile and say,
“God bless you, be at peace”
And all heaven just weeps
Jesus came to your door
You’ve left him out on the streets
Open up, open up
And give yourself away
You see the need, you hear the cries
So how can you delay
God’s calling and you’re the one
But like Jonah you run
He’s told you to speak
But you keep holding it in,
Oh can’t you see it’s such a sin?
The world is sleeping in the dark
And the Church just can’t fight
Cause it’s asleep in the light
How can you be so dead
When you’ve been so well fed
Jesus rose from the grave
You can’t even get out of bed
Sobering isn’t it? And to think this song was written in 1982. I’m sure I’m not the only one who agrees society has gotten worse since then. But, since its foundation in 1974, Student Life (and its parent Campus Crusade For Christ), has kept a strong presence of Christians devoted to fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28) on campuses across Australia and the world. Regardless of how small we seem, we serve a big God, so we can be confident that He has a big plan.
That is why we do what we do – because we have been called, because we have been sent, because we cannot delay in reaching the world for Christ, one campus at a time.
Yours in the confidence of His plan,
